Scientists working within the LITHOPROBE project carry out research at many locations across Canada. The philosophy behind LITHOPROBE is to focus research on regions chosen for geologic, historical, economic, and societal reasons.

By concentrating multidisciplinary studies on specific regions, a far more complete understanding of the earth is obtained. The Special Issue on the Western Superior Province Lithoprobe and NATMAP transects presents a wide spectrum of contributions from coordinated, multidisciplinary research projects on the western region of Earth's largest Archean craton.

Articles include aspects of the geophysical, stratigraphic, geochemical, geochronological, petrological, and structural evidence bearing on the accretionary Cited by: 4. Western Superior Transect The continental nucleus of North America was assembled during the Archean eon.

The Western Superior and SNORCLE transects incorporate studies of two of the best exposed and most representative Archean cratons in the world.

LITHOPROBE would be remiss in not investigating them to the maximum extent possible. • The crust ofthe western Superior province has been imaged by a number of geophysical methods and this aspect will be augmented in the coming years by geophysical investigations carried outunder the Lithoprobe Western Superior Transect Program.

(), in a comprehensive account of the tectonic evolution of the Superior Province that was based in large part on interpretations of the Lithoprobe program, concluded that the MRV terrane was accreted to the Superior craton at c Ma via north-directed subduction.

The Superior Province is bounded to the west and northwest by the Proterozoic Trans Hudson orogen, to the southeast by the Proterozoic Grenville and New Québec orogens, and to the southwest by the Penokean orogen and Proterozoic Midcontinent rift (Hoffman, ).The Lithoprobe Western Superior Transect focuses on the area of the Superior Province in northwestern Ontario ().
